The APTUK Annual National Conference will take
place at Homerton College, Cambridge in April 2003. The conference
is open to all pharmacy technicians.
The 2003 Annual National Conference programme
illustrates that the role of the pharmacy technician in all sectors
has begun to move on from traditional areas of practice. Pharmacy
technicians are about to enter a very new era, both in terms of
pharmacy practice and pharmacy politics and the conference programme
reflects this.
In terms of developing and changing practice,
speakers will cover a wide range of topics, from checking schemes
in community pharmacy, medicines management collaboratives in
primary care to pharmacy technicians working in anticoagulant
clinics in the hospital sector - the scope of the conference will
offer innovation and information of interest to all pharmacy technicians,
in all areas of pharmacy.
These speakers are complemented by a series of
pharmacy technician practice interest groups and networks, which
include UK Medicines Information, the UK Clinical Pharmacy Technician
Network, the primary care network - PASTA and pharmacy technicians
from the military sector. Real opportunities for networking with
other pharmacy technicians are scheduled throughout the conference.
On the political front there is much happening
too. There are many changes afoot, all of which will directly
affect pharmacy technicians over the next few years. Systems for
the registration and professional regulation of pharmacy technicians
will be put in place and in fact, work is already underway. The
government, in all of the home countries, have indicated in their
respective pharmacy strategies that they will be looking closely
at skill-mix and the respective roles of pharmacy staff within
the NHS. As if these issues weren't big enough, ‘Agenda for Change'
is likely to affect the pay and conditions of all pharmacy technicians
in the NHS. Speakers from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of
Great Britain, the Department of Health [england] and the public
sector union, Unison will be briefing pharmacy technicians on
the very latest developments.
Homerton College offers superb conference and
business facilities and is set in the historic city of Cambridge.
Delegates have the option to attend the entire 4-day conference,
or to simple attend the days of their choice.
Places are limited and demand is already high
- So, if you want to ensure that both you and your colleagues
are aware of the latest in practice development and also understand
the wider professional agenda for pharmacy technicians, see the
Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK Journal, or their website,
