"I fully support this campaign. Over the years I have seen my take home pay shrink and now have to hold a full-time and part-time post simply to pay my bills and buy food. A third of what i pay goes in taxes, yet so-called celebrities, such as Jimmy Carr can get away with paying only 1% tax on his estimated £3M a year income and politicians continue to claim ridiculous amounts in expenses. Sometimes I think I would be better off financially on the Dole, yet I have no intention of ever signing on as I am committed to providing a social work service to vulnerable people in our communities"
JH, Edinburgh

"I fully support this campaign not just for me, but for all my low paid colleagues who are struggling to cope with a pay freeze and rising costs of basic necessities like food and heating. We work to provide services to the people in our communities, including the most vulnerable. We should not be the ones to pay for the financial crisis whilst the richest get ever richer and inequality increases."
Kate, Aberdeenshire

UNISON, GMB and Unite unions have launched the Fair Pay campaign. Low pay is a serious issue in local government. In the last two years, local government workers have seen their living standards fall as pay remains the same while prices rise. A pay freeze IS a pay cut. This burden is heaviest on the lowest paid as rising power, food and transport costs mean they experience a real level of inflation far outstripping RPI. Fair Pay is a matter of justice, but it also makes economic sense as increased wages would boost local economies. We’re calling for an end to the pay freeze and for a guaranteed Living Wage of £7.20 per hour for all staff. For full details of the campaign visit: www.unison-scotland.org.uk/localgovt
