Understanding council finances

Branches are to get support - including being able to engage ‘approved’ consultants - to understand local government finance to enable them to better challenge councils when they cut budgets claiming financial problems.

Conference backed the move despite opposite from many branches, including City of Edinburgh, who were concerned about the use of consultants.

To applause, Kevin Duguid called for branches to tap into their own members’ expertise rather than go down the road of consultants.
