Local Government Service Group Conference 14-15 June 2009

FE funding: Recession doesn’t stop at the border

Jim Snell

As conference pledged support for the vital role of adult learning, and called for it to be expanded, especially at a time of recession, Jim Snell, Glasgow City branch gave the issue a Scottish slant.

"Recession does not end at the border," Jim told delegates, and slammed the impact which the lack of funding within FE is having on our members in Scotland.

He told conference of redundancies at Glasgow Nautical College and described how the Funding Council are recouping £3 million from Stow college in Glasgow following an audit.

"A cynic might say that this was a result of Stow College withdrawing from merger, as the redirection of funds which they were being penalised for had been going on for years." J

im warned that the full impact has yet to be felt by our members and called on conference to support the motion.
