ACCESS TO WORK

If as a Branch activist you do not yet know about Access to Work you are encouraged to understand who and what the Disability Services are and how using them can be of assistance when representing a member with disabilities.

Disability Services Scotland are part of the Employment Service.

Local Addresses are below.

The main point of contact for employers is the Disability Employment Adviser (DEA) whose primary function is to place people with disabilities into jobs. They also provide advice and guidance to disabled workers who require specialist help in keeping employment.

DEA's can be accessed by employers to:

  • Develop good employer practices around disability.
  • Retaining employees who become disabled.

As Branch activists you can either work with an employer using DEA's or contact them on behalf of a member. You are encouraged to find out more and use this service where appropriate.

Detailed below are extracts from the Employment Services leaflet on `Access to Work'.

"Practical help for disabled people and their employers to overcome work related problems which arise because of disability.

"Flexible support which may include:

  • Special Equipment
  • Adapting Premises and Equipment
  • Support Workers
  • Fares to Work
  • Personal Reader Service
  • Communication Support at Interview

"Access to Work can help you to make the most of your opportunities in work by helping you to tackle some of the practical obstacles you may meet at work if you have a disability.

"It offers practical advice and help in a flexible way so that it can be tailored to suit your needs.

"It applies to any job, part-time or full-time, permanent or temporary.

"Access to Work can assist in a number of ways. For example:-

- A communicator if you are deaf or have a hearing impairment and need a communicator with you at an interview.

- A reader at work if you are blind or have a visual impairment.

- Special equipment (or alterations to existing equipment) to suit your practical work needs, if you need it because of disability.

- Alterations to premises or working environment if you need it because of disability.

- A support worker if you need practical help because of your disability either at work or getting to work.

- Help towards the cost of getting to work if you are unable to use public transport because of your disability.

"Access to Work will meet all of the approved costs of help.

"Access to Work will meet up to 80% of the approved costs of help after the first £300.

"If total approved costs are more than £10,000 over 3 years, Access to Work will pay 100% of the approved costs between £10,000 and the actual cost.

"If you need help with Travel to Work or Communicator Support at Interview, Access to Work will meet all of the approved costs whether you are unemployed or already in a job.

"We will approve help for as long as you need it up to a maximum of 3 years.

"The Job Centre will put you in touch with your Disability Employment Adviser (DEA) who will discuss Access to Work with you and explain how to apply".

Access to Work can be used to keep members in employment. USE IT.
