Every month we have a different part
of Scotland writing about specific issues in their area.
Focus on Fife - Michelle Smith - Young
Members Officer
I'm Michelle Smith, 25 years old and I am the Young
Members Officer (YMO) for UNISON Fife.
At present, the average age of a UNISON Member is
43 years old, which is why I am looking to continue to increase
the number of young people joining UNISON and becoming active.
Young Members are the future of UNISON so I am taking this opportunity
to urge all Fife Young Member's to join in and support the many
issues that will face us in the next few years.
My Role as YMO is as follows: -
- Recruit new members and encourage existing young members
to become active;
- To make sure issues of concern to young workers are raised
by the branch;
- To be a focal point for all Young Members in the branch
and workplace so they can come to me with ideas, concerns
or problems;
If UNISON is to survive, grow and continue to be
the vibrant and progressive voice it is today, we need to recruit
and retain new young members. Young people are the voice of the
future and we need to be heard. I strongly believe in giving young
people in the workplace more opportunities to help them grow and
develop, to help them become more confident and have a positive
attitude within their workplace - basically giving them a fair
deal!
Contact the branch and ask for more details on how
to become active in the union and get involved with issues directly
affecting YOU! Meantime please do not hesitate to contact me with
any questions or issues you may have.
I look forward to hearing from you.
