What UNISON is doing
The Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Tsunami victims
has now closed after raising £300m. You can still donate online
to the Sudan Emergency Appeal.
On 4 January UNISON UK pledged an initial £10,000 to the
Disasters Emergency Committee (the umbrella group for many aid organisations)
with a further £10,000 earmarked to help our sister trade
unions in the affected areas. (See
UNISON UK News)
General Secretary Dave Prentis has urged all members and branches
to make donations.
"No one can have failed to be touched by the overwhelming scale
of the disaster or the deep personal impact it has had", said
Dave.
"Our hearts are with all those who have suffered so terribly over
the last days. And our thoughts are with all our fellow emergency
workers, health workers and local government staff who have been,
and continue to be, working so tirelessly on the frontline of the
rescue and aid operations.”
We are aware that many members have made considerable personal
donations and that many are also involved with aid charities. We
are also aware that City of Edinburgh staff gave of their time on
Hogmanay to collect money at the street party. UNISON congratulates
all its members on their contribution at the time of this unprecedented
tragedy.
