There is a TUC-supported project to establish an oral history archive of LGBT trade unionists and they are looking for interviewees who were active in unions in the 1970s and 1980s. Interviews will be carried out in different geographical locations by a team of trained interviewers.

If you would like to volunteer to be interviewed or be trained as an interviewee, you should send your name and contact details, with a very brief synopsis of your experience, in which union(s) and when, to Seth Atkin satkin@ucu.org.uk no later than 14 March 2008. Interviews are expected to take place in May and June. If you have friends or family who were active LGBT trade unionists in the 70’s and 80’s please pass this information on to them.

LGBT UNISON logoLesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are still denied equality in the workplace - too often we face discrimination and harassment instead of a fair deal. Joining UNISON gives you a voice in Britain's biggest union, which is committed to working for LGBT rights.

At present, lesbians and gay men in UNISON organise locally and nationally to support each other, to identify discrimination, to increase awareness of lesbian and gay rights and to campaign for change. The UNISON lesbian and gay conference has voted to become an LGBT group and we are working to build support for this from the rest of the union. Together we can speak up for our rights at work and improve each other's lives.

About Self Organisation

To make sure all our members have a voice in the union, UNISON members have set up 'self-organised groups' to provide a voice for people who are traditionally under represented. UNISON has groups at national, regional and local level for women, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members, black members and disabled members. These groups are designed to be self-organising but also integral to the union's structures.
