Lifelong Learning Report

LIFELONG LEARNING REPORT 2007/08

UNISON Scotland continues to look towards securing funding from the Scottish Union Learning Fund to build on the successes we have had in lifelong learning.

Two major projects within lifelong learning were delivered successfully in 2007/08:

SULF 6 : Highland Region:

This project was led by UNISON's Lifelong Learning Fieldworker, Philippa Clark, who worked closely with local branches, employers, the STUC and WEA and other unions. The project created more Union Learning Reps and culminated with the signing of two learning agreements with employers. Lifelong learning within the Highlands has become a fundamental issue for the workforce and employers.

Literacy & Numeracy Project:

This project was led by UNISON's Learning Development Officers - Carol MacSwan and Derek Durkin. Carol and Derek have been successful in embedding literacy and numeracy awareness within induction sessions with employers. The project, working in partnership with the WEA, has run literacy and numeracy awareness courses for ULRs and employers. Courses involving one-to-one and group work have been developed and delivered to those with literacy needs.

Internal Programme:

UNISON Scotland continues to promote lifelong learning courses through its internal programme. These courses are offered free of charge to UNISON members however they don't come under the learning@work programme and have to be delivered outside working hours. We would like to encourage our members to participate in the lifelong learning courses and more information on these can be found within the Course Description Section of this programme.

Union Learning Reps (ULRs):

Our aim is to build on the infrastructure of our branches to be able to inform our members and help them achieve their learning and training needs in the widest sense. We want to encourage our members to become advocates for learning and to help us promote learning not only to our members but to the wider workforce. We are happy to deliver ULR courses - please see "Your Branch" Section for further information on how to secure a place on a course.
